I’ll confess I made an early Google search to try and decipher what the extravagant title of Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana actually means. It turns out “Lacrimosa” is the Latin for “weeping”, most notably the title of a Mozart requiem. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an Action Role Playing Game on the surface and a Japanese Role Playing Game at it’s core. The basic gameplay, which consists of exploration and combat is handled in third person view. Initially, you just play as Adol, but as you find other castaways from the shipwreck, you start adding to your party.

With a playtime of over double the other entries in the series, and a boatload of content, Ys VIII might make getting shipwrecked seem exciting. The latest, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, is the first new Ys game in four years, and features the series’ largest scale yet in terms of sheer content volume. The Ys spirit burns brightly in Ys VIII, but this rollicking action RPG narrowly misses the mark for excellence thanks to a flat localization and lethargic pacing. 2017-09-12 After nearly seven years, it’s finally time for another adventure with Adol and Dogi in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. Things begin in rather standard form with the two adventurers traveling Review: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA (Reviewed on Nintendo Switch, also on PS4, PS Vita and PC) With the promise of being a big adventure on a deserted island, Ys VIII certainly delivers.
